Meg Whitman Makes It Rain

Meg Whitman, a candidate in the mid elections for the governor of California, has broken the all-time spending record towards a campaign. She has personally given a total of $119 million to her campaign thus far. Whitman says that it takes a lot to be competitive in California, and that she is delighted where she is at.
I haven't been involved in these elections so far, so I haven't become confident with each candidate and their background, what they stand for, and their campaign strategies. To me, this seems a little much. I understand the point of the campaigns -- it's to get your face out there and to get your message to the masses -- but why spend so much? Like the article says, dishing out all this money doesn't guarantee a win. I'll just have to follow up and see what's to come from Meg Whitman.
